PERSONALITY:

Nature over nurture doesn't really apply when it comes to Dean Winchester because he didn't get much of either. At a young age, he was forced to be a parent instead of a brother, he didn't have a childhood and what qualified as normal for him didn't even come close to the real classification for anybody else. Instead of field trips and hot babysitters he was brought up off the grid and under the radar, with a gun in his hand and a blade at his hip. His primary responsibility was his kid brother Sam and everything else was learning the tools of the trade, the lore, and law of the land. Innocence wasn't even an option, that's a luxury you don't get to have after witnessing your mom pinned up on the ceiling over your baby brother's bedside.

After a decade of fighting tooth and nail to survive, the core of Dean's personality has always been focused on doing things the right way while making as little waves as possible. The fewer causalities the better, Dean is no stranger to putting the life of someone else before his own. It's a badge of honor he's unlucky enough to wear, and not just because he's seen and been through worse than the average Joe. The only thing that ever got him through life on the lam was knowing that what he did meant something even if locals weren't exactly itching to give him extra credit or the key to the city.

Unlike his brother Dean plays things pretty close to the chest, he knows he's not the brains of the operation and considers himself a soldier or a grunt before the main player. What he lacks in charisma gets covered up by an immature frat boy personality and a no-beating-around-the-bush policy at life. Humor is his defense mechanism and a large part of his machismo. Dean has perfected the art of how to get the last word with an off-handed comment or a sarcastic wisecrack. Despite not being as well taught with his GED degree, his seasoned street smarts keep him alive and out of trouble, most of the time. A background in profiling and being a good liar doesn't hurt either.

After seeing enough people die it's not unreasonable to cut off ties or avoid getting close to people. Dean cares underneath the surface, and he's more empathetic and perceptive than he lets on, but actually letting people in past the bravado or confiding in someone is another story.

Stubborn as an ass is likely in every case file that's ever been put together on him, after a lifetime of difficulty with the feds and every authoritative figure he's ever had. Dean has lived his life relying on surveillance and gut instinct, and usually, it doesn't fail him. He's not opposed to trickery, or giving someone the slip instead of cluing them in on what's really going on. It helps to line his wallet too, slight of hand has never been a problem and being raised the way he was he knows how to con better than most street thugs because he plays the long game and he plays it to win. Leaving something unfinished isn't his style.

Rowdy and restless, something he's never been good at is patience. He's got a mean streak a mile-wide and the temper to match it. The longer he has idle hands the more likely it is that he will snap or do something reckless. Dean's no stranger to vices and believes in a healthy relationship with alcoholism and womanizing. Nothing too flagrant or over the top, but he considers himself both a functional alcoholic and an unattached drifter. He's long since given up the dream of an apple-pie life. Too much margin for error, too many bodies with his name on them. Overindulging in the finer things like good food, booze, women, and porn takes his mind off of how shitty his life can get. It's nice to have gluttony to fall back on when things are rough.

Underneath the closed-off exterior, there's a loyal guy with true dedication to his friends and family. There's no length he wouldn't go to in order to protect someone he cares about, even if it means trading his own future to ensure theirs. His judgment may not always be sound but once someone is a friend or an ally, he'll always be willing to go to blows for them. That usually means he's got eyes out for trouble and will drop everything to help, but it's a two-way street and it's no small feat to earn that kind of trust from him.

Despite the arrogance and the Don Juan attitude, Dean suffers from chronic insecurity and self-loathing. The balancing act that is his ego, is a tight wire death trap not even the most dutiful acrobats should attempt. Even though he's got most of it suppressed, in the usual way he handles all faults and trauma, it sometimes bleeds through the surface and causes lapses in judgment.

The only thing that matters, the only thing that ever mattered to him was Sam. He's had lovers and other family members surrogate or blood-related come and go, but it always comes back to the kid brother he was forced to raise and provide for. “Look out for your little brother,” isn't just a suggestion anymore, or a command, it's become implicit in his life. It's the driving force behind so many of his decisions and even though that kind of Codependency is unhealthy it's also what keeps him going when the chips are down.

Dean Winchester is a leather and plaid draped lumbering survival virtuoso but that doesn't mean he's infallible. At the end of the day, he's a loud, sarcastic, alcoholics anonymous reject with ten bucks to his name and a car he's friendlier toward than most people. The soldier mentality has been beaten into him, even if he doesn't like it and has plenty to say about it, he'll still run right into the line of fire to keep the death toll from rising.

CANON POWERS: Outside of an unusual sense of intuition, keen knowledge and a proficiency with weapons and mechanics Dean's no super-hero or super-sleuth. Survival instincts and supernatural know-how is a pretty big perk of the life.
